Overview: Complexities of aging, including multi-morbidity, frailty and dementia, create circumstances of care in which a broad palliative care framework is most useful. Palliative care is patient- and family-centered care that optimizes quality of life and can be offered anytime in the trajectory of illness. A palliative care approach to pain management addresses all types of pain and related symptoms, crosses settings of care with emphasis on community based approaches, and honors older adult and family preferences, goals and beliefs in establishing and implementing high quality pain care.
